Finasteride

Operation
Finasteride is a synthetic 5
α-reductase enzyme inhibitor and has a direct effect on one of the steroids, named dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
Through its resemblance to natural testosterone, it irreversibly blocks the conversion the sex hormone testosterone, in the presence of the 5α-reductase enzyme, preventing its conversion into DHT. According to our current knowledge and research, certain hair follicles respond to DHT with the reduction of the diameter of the strand, in the anagen (growth) phase.
This sensitivity of the hair follicle is hereditary. Finasteride inhibits this process, as explained above. The hair follicles can then react with an extension of the anagen phase. If the treatment is interrupted, the DHT levels in the blood will become elevated, just like they used to be prior to the treatment, and also the re-grown hair follicles may fail again. Initial success can only be observed from a treatment period of 3 to 6 months. Multi-annual international studies show that at 80 to 90% of users experience a stop of progressive hair loss and about 65% of them experience a thickening of the hair strands, during the treatment.
Unlike previously thought, a study from 2003 indicates that finasteride may also have a significant effect for users from 41 to 60 years old.
Side Effects
of Finasteride
Side-effects of finasteride are uncommon at low dosage of 1 mg per day
(ie, 0.1% to 1% of patients). Often however, higher doses of 5 mg per day
(ie, 1% to 10% of patients), may lead to the appearance of side-effects such as decreased libido and erectile dysfunction.
